About

Mission Statement: My goal is to create an environment that fosters recovery through language, imagery, and self-expression. This site is a medium for catharsis--I invite you to use it.

As humans, we crave to find reason in every occurrence, including the tragedies. So when I was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at age 12, I thought, "Why me? Was I chosen to fight this battle for a reason?" And after 4 long, hard years of recovery and many many hospitalizations later, I came to this conclusion: maybe there really was no reason. Maybe it was bad luck. But I decided that I needed something positive to come out of this difficult journey. I needed to create my own reason. And I did just that. The reason I struggled with this disorder was to become a stronger, more sympathetic person. It was the world's way of telling me that I was destined to help others, to show them that they're not alone. So, to fulfill this supposed "reason", I have created this website.

I envision Numbers Don't Define Us as so much more than a site: it is a community, a platform to be heard, a therapist. I seek to create an environment that shows others that we are so much more than a number. Our weight, our GPA, our test scores--they do not define us. They are just numbers. We are so much more than just that. We are human: we have hearts, minds, souls. And we define ourselves. We are whatever we want to be.

I encourage you all to read our weekly posts. And maybe, just maybe, you may realize that however scared or sad or empty you feel--others have been there too. You may not magically feel all better, but you can surely feel less pain in knowing that you are not alone. Read with an open mind and heart. This site is meant to be a place where your voice can be heard. With that being said, feel free to submit any writing or art pieces that you feel contribute to our mission.
